Oil on canvas, 30 × 40 in, © 2025 J.M. Bond.

A black panther perches amid a ground of faceted planes, its body rendered in geometric tessellations of deep brown, black, and violet. Golden eyes pierce through the surface with quiet presence. In this exhibit, the work recalls the fascination of early 20th-century elites with exotic animals, treasured as both living trophies and aesthetic statements of power.

Exhibition Description:

No one really needs a panther. A monkey rattles in the other room, and an exotic bird trills from its cage. No one needs them either. That’s why they are perfect. Ornament and predator, mischief, torment – and perfect, all at once.

You tell yourself it’s excess, that it’s wrong to want what doesn’t belong. And still—if you could, you’d keep him too. Some luxuries are irresistible precisely because they’re alive.
